To what extent and in what way, can users interact with 3D shapes through touch?
In order to answer that Victor Szilagyi & me observed in a series of "blind tests" how do users cope with touch.
Users were asked to place one hand on a transformable pin surface hidden inside a box,
read the shapes ("bumps" and "grooves") displayed on the surface, and describe what they felt while drawing it with their second hand.
Along three iterations we gained much input, for e.g. - formations were complex, orientation on the display was unstable, & edgeless shapes communicated better.
Users were agile & intuitive however, in tracking & interpreting moving bumps. An ability we targetd in developing the morphing buttons we named as Tactons.
