Nitinol Knits
'Talking to The Hand'

RESEARCH work and explorative projects

I recently summed up a years work on my M.A thesis 'Talking to the hand', an investigation into shape-change behavior in digital objects and tangible interfaces, and its potential as an interactive medium.
My interest in shape-change began with an effort to develop a technique to knit Nitinol wires into a structure that can change shape. This effort produced a dynamic skeleton layered with a textile skin that deployed when triggered electrically.
The iterative process that followed, 'Talking to the hand', was an attempt to answer to the question, why should objects change shape? through a series of explorations, observations, working prototypes, video scenarios, and a written thesis.
