| NITINOL KNITS use the Shape Memory effect to deploy... |
I initially thought about an easy way to build morphing structures, and got hooked with Nitinol.
It then seemed pretty sensible to look for a solution in traditional textile techniques, as they provide an immense array of similar solutions in other materials.
However, knitting cold worked Nitinol proved complicated, since it behaved like a spring, and all hand tools and machinery used for knitting couldn't do the job.
The solution i developed at the end, was a mandrel that contained the path for knitting, and could hold the structure in-place until shape setting was performed.
Another part of the process involved making necessary tools, mainly a 600°c furnace and various mandrels. |
